Fishing in Waverly

While we were in Iowa, Nate really, really wanted to go fishing.  Nate and Josh even made a little trip to Walmart to find the latest and greatest fish bait, luers, and such.

Nate, Josh, G-ma Kathy, Miles and I all walked down to the cedar river. Nate and Josh fished a short while, but had no luck! Apparently, there’s nothing swimming in the river. If there was, you know these boys would have caught them, right?!

Meanwhile, Miles walked, crawled, and played his little heart out.

Monday night – the night before we left for Iowa – Miles got haircut #3!

We got Nate’s clippers out and buzzed him to one inch!  Man, does he look like a little boy now! Where’s my little baby!?

A Picturesque Saturday

Today was a hot, humid, rainy day in White Plains. We tried everything we could to find fun inside.
Below is Miles trying to be like Cooper

Here's Miles still trying to be Cooper!

Miles trying to gnaw on as many of his little people as he can.

Miles getting all pumped up about the Bear's preseason game tonight!

Miles - praticing his skills for defensive domination!

Miles checking out the toothbrush. I've never let him hold it before. I know - I'm mean!

Tonight, Miles brushed his own teeth...

...and then threw a screaming fit when I took the brush away. He only has 8 teeth!
I thought that 10 minutes of brushing should have been sufficient!

Will Walk for Food

Finally got a quick little clip of Miles in action!

Take 2

Besides the obvious star of the videos above, I must give credit to the other participant. Miles loves this new little snack! Yogurt Rice Crisp bars. Miles had the banana ones - we got them at target! I highly suggest you let your little toddlers give them a whirl!

Saturday Family Fun

(from last weekend, August 15)

The whole family when into the city on Saturday. It was a super sticky 95 degree day. We visited the Central Park Zoo and Highline Park. We’re nuts, I know!

Miles loved the kid’s zoo – this time his favorites were the sheep and the splashing sea lions! sorry – Nate has these pics on his camera.

Nate loved Highline park. Its a park made in the place of some old rail line or something. You’ll have to ask Nate about it if you really want to understand it.  It’s an architectural thing – by one of Nate’s NYC fav’s – Diller and Scofidio. (Beware – the website is over “Flashed” and super annoying!!) Nate, are you proud of me for remembering?!

It was a super hot day, so we were lucky to find a shaded, breezy area in the park for Miles to eat his mid afternoon snack. Nate enjoyed his iced coffee. I just sat and adored my boys.  Miles got to ride on dad’s shoulders while we strolled the length of the park, I actually thought that it was a great little family day – the architecture wasn’t even that bad! Parks are cool :)  Wish they had a swing set though….

The pics below are just of the train ride into the city…

Miles’ first steps

Miles took his first steps yesterday :)  He took 3 steps 3 different times!

I stood him up against the ottoman and grabbed his Chicago Bear (thanks Aunt Beth and Unc Nick!).  I got Miles to look at me while I got very excited about the bear and gave the bear big hugs! Miles didn’t hesitate to start walking towards me!  The best part was that he repeated the show 2 more times! The 4th try was a bust. He knelt down and started to cry. Apparently, he was exhausted and needed to go to bed.

Sorry – there is no video available. Times like that, I wish I had an extra couple sets of hands!!

Today, Miles refused to show off for dad, but took a few steps for his favorite ladies at his daycare today.  When he gets a little better (ie. requires less coaching) I will try and get you all a video! Should be any day now :)

A Minor Shiner…

Oh my… so much has happened since I was last able to post a Miles update.  I will start with the black eye (today) and see how far I get before the internet crashes again or I can’t remember anything anymore!

So… Miles woke up from his morning nap at daycare today with his very first black eye.  Both the daycare provider and I are unsure which of Miles’  many falls may have caused it, but either way… Miles will love knowing that he got his first '”tough guy” injury at 9 months old! This kid has no fear!!

I can’t get a good picture – so I’ll just post a few…

Is this common after a little boy takes his first steps?  My guess is that it was probably from standing up in his crib and getting so mad that he fell over and smacked his face. Ahh.. boys!

White Plains Residents

So - as many of you probably already know, Les Paul (as in the super famous guitars-Les Paul) passed away this week. He was living in White Plains, NY. That got me thinking - who else lives in White Plains? I'd love to start a quest to see famous people in White Plains.

I saw that John Tesh does a nationally syndicated radio show out of New York. Wiki has this list for its notable residents. Below are a couple of the highlights...

Mark Zuckerberg - the founder of facebook was born here. That's super cool, huh!?
Tupac went to high school here for a short time.
Oh.. and Alan Alda too!
There have to be more... the Wiki list appears fairly incomplete. I'll let you know what I find.

Random, I know...

Mommy’s little ‘helper’?

DSC02703

Whatcha doing, Mom?

Miles follows me everywhere

 DSC02702

I can help you, mom! Peek-a-boo, daddy!

Then I had the ‘brilliant’ thought that if I stopped to play a little, maybe he’d give me a little break to finish things up. Wrong! oh well…… DSC02706

Miles loves to be thrown around…….

Super Hot Monday

After a tough weekend packed with car trouble, Monday was the hottest day of the entire summer so far. Driving home from work/daycare on Monday with no A/C or vent function in the car was horrible since we hit temps over 95 degrees with super high humidity. We drove with the windows wide open on the interstate, but Miles’ sweat soaked through his clothes and car seat cover. No wonder he was so angry.

To cool down when we got home, I let Miles play with a new toy – An ice cube.  They are slippery little buggers!DSC02690

After that, we took Cooper outside to do his business and Miles enjoyed a pedialyte popsicle. He was finally cooling down and feeling a little better.

Heeding the pediatrican’s advice – today was the first day of his new eating schedule. We are supposed to start taking away the bottle. We’ve successfully done that with the exception of the 6am bottle. We are also supposed to give Miles less formula, more solids.

You would never believe what and how much this kid has been eating!

Here’s what he ate today:

6am – 7 oz bottle

8am – melon and pancakes (when we arrived at daycare – not usually an eating time)

9am – container of mandarin oranges and large handful of cheerios with 4oz formula in a sippy cup.

12pm – yo baby yogurt, 5 tablespoons infant cereal, and 6 oz diluted juice in sippy

4pm – 5 fruit newtons and 4oz formula from sippy

6:30pm – 1 piece of buttered toast, 1/4 cup frozen peas, 3/4 of a banana, 2.5 slices of lunch meat ham.  He would have eaten more, but I made him stop. That was just crazy!!

At this rate, my little boy will not be little for long…

Doosie of a day

The day started off so great! Miles slept through the night for the 2nd night in a row and for the 2nd night ever since moving to NY.  I got up with Miles at 5:20am, but was pleased to see that Nate was actually laying next to me.  I went to bed thinking that he was staying in the city over night! See my point! Great day so far….

Nate slept in until 8:30am leaving him with a whopping 6 hours of sleep. Miles and I walked him to the train station around 9:30am and then went for a run. Miles liked the fast ride in the stroller- well, he would have liked it had he stayed awake for it! Miles slept for 90% of our little early AM outing.

Miles and I checked out the apartment’s pool (indoor) when we got back. I waned to see if the water was still really cold. It was :(  There went that idea.  So, Miles and I played a bit and then he napped for 2 hours. (side note:That’s a huge amount of sleep for Miles in the last few days-hmmmm  another growth spurt! You have to be kidding!!)We had plans of going to the Bronx Zoo, but Nate called to say that if we were going into the city, he’d appreciate a few things brought down to him. That’s not a problem for us – besides, Miles loves showing off his “baby-ness” to all of the architecture kids who are freaked out by the idea of babies, but still love the little guy. Miles does love himself some extra attention!

On the way down to see Nate, the Zoo idea was cancelled. My car decided it felt like dying. The air conditioner stopped working on this beautiful 85 degree day in stop’n’go traffic entering Manhatten. As the air stopped working, a fine mist entered the cabin of the car via the vents. That mist quickly became a burnt rubber smelling grey smoke! Windows Down!! The car kept running ok, though the engine temp would rise pretty rapidly while idling, just to cool down again when we started moving again.  (where’s my dad or BIL-Tim when you really need them?!)

The typically 30 minute trip to Columbia took 1 hour and 40 minutes today thanks to the Yankee/Red sox game(I have to drive right past the stadium to get to school). I was not thrilled, especially  since the car had already demonstrated her anger while the sweaty baby in the back was voicing his anger! Ha – that makes me think of a 80’s hair band…” can you take me higher?? It’s never over…”

So, we arrived at Nate’s school all well and good (enough). We hung out for a while. Nate showed off his beautiful baby boy. We even got to see Nate’s model.

Here’s the pesky design hogging my husband’s attention. If you have questions, you’ll have to talk to him about it. It confuses me!

The ride home was alright. The car runs, but that’s about it! The windows were wide open and the wind was making Miles’ hair dance. He slept most of the way home! We had just enough time to make a quick walking, errand trip to Target and then come home to feed, bathe, and put Miles to sleep!

He went to bed super fast! Finally, the day is looking up again! Time to give it a proper ending – watch Juno, write a blog about the doosie-day, walk down to the far, far, away lobby to find internet access post blog on the internet (wish ours worked!) and then to bed for me! Hmm.. Will Nate come home tonight?  I guess I will find out in the morning.

Good night!

Big boy meal: Follow-up

So… Miles loved eating like a little man so much that we tried to improve on last night’s venture.

Miles had the same little pasta pieces (Ditali 10 shaped), but instead of spaghetti sauce, the noodles were lightly buttered. Miles ate these much better! He spent a lot of time chasing the little noodles across the table since they were slippery little buggers!

To go with the pasta, Miles ate frozen peas and Miles-sized chunks of nectarine! Again, the fruit I gave him was slippery – but I almost think the chase was half the fun! Miles ate a lot tonight! Hopefully he sleeps a little better.

His cold is getting better and his gums have simmered down a bit. There is light at the end of the tunnel! I cannot wait until he’s sleeping through the night again!

big boy meal

Today, Miles got to enjoy an entire meal free of the label Gerber or its generic and organic counterparts! He started with Bananas _ always a tasty choice!!

 DSC02602

Next he ate some pasta with a tomato sauce. He loved the noodles, but the sauce seemed to be a little much. He made a sour, scrunched face with each bite. I might have to try a different flavor - I wasn’t thinking when I chose garlic and mushroom Prego from the cabinet! Oops! Silly mom!

DSC02603

DSC02605

After a nice palette cleansing with filtered tap water, Miles topped off with a handful of cheerios! Finally, the perfect finish to a fine meal is a bath! Miles' favorite part of the day!!!

DSC02633

He thinks he can catch the water. Silly little man!

DSC02637

Mom, I can do it myself! (he’s so particular about his hair)

DSC02648

All done! Get me out of here!

Bath, sleep, play, eat, repeat!!

Internet problems

Sorry about the lack of posts the last couple of days! I promise to get back at it as soon as our home internet is working again. I've had lots of ideas for posts and no internet to get my thoughts out there. My ideas are fading! Ahh..

Hope it's not too much longer.....

Caring is Sharing

Miles decided he would take is truck to daycare for show and tell yesterday (friday). He loves to show off his skills. I was a little worried he would have a hard time letting the other kids touch his toys, but so far, this isn't a problem.

There are 2 little boys that look up to Miles and try to mimic his every move. Nicholas (10 months) is just about ready to crawl and Nathan (6.5 months) is kamando crawling and pulling himself up to stand. When Miles walked in -literally- with his truck, Nicholas rolled over and wanted to touch. Miles gave him one of the little car's right away. When Nathan showed up, he did his little belly crawl over to Miles. Miles was soo happy to share (and show off!)

Miles and the other kids all took their turns checking out the truck - of course Miles is the only one close to walking so he hogged it a little. It's ok though, right? It's his toy... :) I'm just happy to see that he is capable of sharing. He's a little on the spoiled side.....

Thanks to a couple of you for the reminder about the family picture poster "game". We forgot all about shuffling up the pictures. He has continued to pull down our picture. One day, instead of hanging our picture back up, the teacher just set the picture up high for the rest of the day. In some angry little protest, he pulled down another little girl's family - the one right next to his picture. Since putting his family picture back up, he has left Cecelia's alone. I will talk with the daycare provider about mixing them up. I'm so sorry we forgot!

Miles' new favorite form of communication is grunting. If I ask him questions, the only answer I get is a grunt. I need to get this on video for you all. "Miles, are you done eating?" Grunt! "Miles, do you want more pancakes?" Grunt! Miles and I were dancing Thursday evening to the song from his 9 month video. The song cut out about half way through. His response was a stong, syncopated grunt until I got the song restarted and the dancing could resume! Boy, does this little man have attitude!?! He has lots of opinions and is struggling to make others understand. I'm afraid of words now - the grunts are kind of funny for now :)

Oh.. a bad habit seems to be forming. Miles wants me all of the time. He thinks mom needs hold him-all of the time. He used to be really good at playing on his own, but now he's super needy. His doctor told us that he's at the age most kids start the separation anxiety thing. I need to try and figure out how to stop it right away. Dropping him off at daycare could be tough if he's crying and chasing me as I walk out of his room in the morning.
Soo.. to say good bye for now, here's a picture of Miles less than 3 minutes ago. This is what he was doing as I tried to quickly finish up this blog - he woke up way too early from his afternoon nap!
