Game #2

This Saturday was Miles’ 2nd soccer game.

It had rained all night long, so the field was a swamp on Saturday morning. The winds were high and the temps were in the low 40’s.   Needless to say, we were delighted to find out the the game had been moved into the field house!

Time to get warmed up!

Summarizing the game:

Miles did MUCH better this week,  which was necessary considering the team we played. The purple team was amazing!  They had two little boys with no fear and great aim.  As for Miles’ team, all the rest of the kids showed up this week.  He had to fight for a turn with the ball, and had to combat to confused ones to secure any shot at the goal.  One kid on Miles’ team actually goal tended for the purple team.  Whenever yellow would get the ball near the other teams goal, this kid would take his turn to kick, but continually booted it the wrong way. Another kid scored two goals for the purple team! I’m glad this isn’t a competitive league… way too frustrating!

Oh well…  hopefully the team will clear up some of it’s confusion before next week. Miles didn’t get to score at all, but left in a great mood and said that he was “all pumped up for the red team next week!” He’s having fun and learning how to act during team sports.  I’m loving sitting on the sidelines… cheering while Miles develops!

Special Package

While checking the mail last week, Miles found that he had received a special package! We rushed back to our apartment to determine its contents. We weren’t expecting anything.  What could this be?!

The outside of the package read like this:

photo 5

From Laura and Caleb (K-Bob)  --> This is going to be good!

Look at that concentration…

photo 6photo 7photo 1

What is this? Is that Bieber? Oh- YEAH!

photo 2Did you catch what it was?  It’s a Justin Bieber singing toothbrush! HA!

photo 3

Miles absolutely loves it. The toothbrush sings two songs: Baby and USmile.  Press the ‘daytime’ button for Baby and the ‘nighttime"’ button for USmile. Of course, Miles-lover of rules and technicalities, will only play the appropriate tune at each brushing.  The parental bonus is that both songs play for 2 minutes letting my shortcutting 3 year old know that he reached the recommended ADA brushing requirement. Genius!

Miles no longer complains when we ask him to Bieber his teeth :)

I know you love me. I know you care....

THANKS,  Caleb and Laura!

Miles loves to play Tiger Woods Golf on Nate's phone.  He's actually pretty good at it too.  Tonight, Nate decided to break out a bit of vintage technology: the PS2.

5 Love Languages

Way, way back (8 years ago) when Nate and I were completing marriage prep his pastor, we read a TON of books.  The most influential - helpful - life changing book we read was the 5 Love Languages by Gary D. Chapman.

This book rips apart how to give and receive love. Most people have a grasp on how they feel most loved, but did you EVER stop and think that your spouse may feel love in a different way?
Most likely, they do!

If you and your spouse are not speaking the right languages, there will be a total disconnect. We are part of a generation that loves efficiency.  Wouldn't you want to make sure that the effort you are putting forth to love your husband or wife is being received as love?

That's why this book is GREAT! I have a copy that I can lend to you_ as soon as I remember who I lent it too...
I read this book once in the summer of 2004, and again while we lived in New York. My love languages really didn't change much during the first 5 years of our marriage.  I thought - for sure - that my languages were set in stone.  I am a creature of habit.

Going through my old notes, I found my original ranking:
1 - quality time
2 - acts of service
3 - physical touch
4 - words of affirmation
5 - gifts

This totally made sense to me..... I was new to marriage and living with a husband who was a full-time student, both at Iowa State and Columbia University.  I was adjusting to living with another person and taking care for the home while Nate was immersed in an intense program.  I felt most loved when Nate would make time for me, giving me all of his attention and focus.  I didn't really even care what we were doing as long as Nate could block out the studio deadlines and be present with me.
Also, a very close second was acts of service.  I took a lot of pride in cooking, cleaning, keeping the refrigerator stocked and later, caring for Miles.  I felt loved when Nate would help out with the workload without being asked.  I knew he loved and appreciated everything I was doing when he would help out once in a while. This book was so spot on and eye opening! (Especially since his love languages were totally different!)

I was reading this blog post from another blog that I enjoy and saw that there's now an online assessment.
You can take the quiz yourself right here.

So, I took it again - the one for the wife, obviously.  Here's my new ranking/scores:

Love Language Scores (Perfect score is 12):

10 - Physical Touch
9 - Words of Affirmation
7 - Quality Time
4 - Acts of Service
0 - Receiving Gifts

My, my how things have changed! (Honestly, this looks like Nate's scores 8 years ago.... )
After having a delightful little boy, my looks have changed. I melt when Nate compliments my looks, my cooking, or my talents... Not the sarcastic, funny comments, but the real compliments! Also, for Nate to reach out and hold my hand or put his arm around me like we are still young and dating also screams love!

I haven't gotten Nate to take the test again yet, but my guess is that the's still about the same. He's my constant these days.

I wonder what will my language look like in 8 more years?! If I'm still blogging, I'll let you know...

Another positive note... there are now more love languages books: for your children, for singles, for parents of teenagers....
Ooh! and A Perfect Pet for Peyton (children's book)!
I'm curious, aren't you?

First REAL Drawing

We've been working with Miles a lot lately, trying to get him to write ABC's and draw happy faces.  Until recently, everything was a scribble.  A few months ago, his "M's" became recognizable.  I didn't think drawing his dad's pretty face would be next - BUT I'm so giddy that it is!

I know I brag about him a lot, but I really do think he's pretty amazing.

Miles grabbed some of his dad's 'already-been-drawn-on' architecture paper (tracing paper) and a red 'architect' pen and said:

Miles: Dad, I'm going to draw with this, ok?
Nathan: Good idea, Miles. Draw on the paper, not the table.
Miles: OK
Kelly: Miles, what are you going to draw?
Miles: I'm going to draw dad. [turns to Nate and studies his face]
Kelly: Ok.  Can you make a circle for his head?
Miles: No. Daddy's head is an oval. [draws the head]
Kelly: Great job! What else is on dad's head?
Miles: Eyes. 2 of them.
Kelly: Ok.  What else?
Miles: A nose. Just one.
Kelly: And what does daddy's mouth look like?
Miles: [draws a mouth] and he needs hair.
Kelly:  Looks great, Miles. Do you need anything else?
Miles: Yes. He has 2 ears.
Kelly: Good job. Are you done?
Miles: Nope. [draws lower extremities] He needs legs and shoes. Big shoes. ALL DONE!
Kelly and NathanMiles! GREAT JOB!!

Take a look for yourself!

I wonder what the art of Salvador Dali or Rembrandt looked like when they were 3 years old?

Big Shot’s First Soccer Game

First of all…  why is this spring so much colder than this past winter?

It was a cold morning… and the coach’s wife was assuming is a major reason that half of Miles’ team didn’t show on Saturday.

There are 8 kids assigned to each team.  All 8 of the green gators, ranging in age from 3 to 5, were dressed and ready to play.  Only 4 kids decided to represent the Yellow Hornets –ALL of them 3 year olds!

SNB12125

It’s ok… Miles will take care of business, right? Take a look at the green team.  There is NOTHING to be afraid of!

SNB12126

Well, there was still one other issue.  The league plays 5 kids from each team at a time. The refs decided to let the yellow team play with the 4 kids they had while the green team got to play 5 kids.  Don’t get mad – this isn’t a competitive league (regardless of what Nate thinks!) and the point is to let the kids play and learn.

Alright- Game on! Gooooooo, Hornets!

 SNB12127

It took a couple passes up and down the field for the kids to learn to basics of what was going on. Practice the last two weeks only included a couple skill-based drills instead of game rules.

SNB12128

Miles wasted little time proving his competence: charging the person with the ball and taking control of the game.  I adore his competitive spirit!

SNB12129

The next thing we knew, Miles dribbled down the field with the ball, leaving the other kids in his dust.  He actually dribbled the ball faster than the other kids could run! What a little stud :) Daddy was proud!

And SCORE!!! Miles scored the first goal of the game! He (we) was so excited….

SNB12130

….until the 5yr old boy you see above (with the green shirt and black hoodie) scored a goal on the following drive down the field.

Miles actually dropped to his knees and started to cry…

Uh oh – did we forget to teach Miles how to be a good sport while teaching him how to be good at sports?

After a little sweet talk, Miles understood that the game wasn’t over – BUT his heart really wasn’t  in it anymore. Luckily, we have 6 more weeks to watch him develop!

SNB12131

Yeah… Yellow hornets!  What a tough, committed group of 3 year olds! The purple panthers have no idea who’s about to stomp on them next week, especially if our 5 year old shows up too!

So…. how do you celebrate a big score? Ba-da-ba-da-da……

mcD's

He’s lovin’ it!

“We won the game….  but I was the STAR!”

A tough lesson about sportsmanship is easily softened with a couple french fries and ketchup!

Oh, and you know good sportsmanship will be discussed extensively this week.  Stay tuned for next week’s  game recap!

The Next Soccer Practice

Below are the pictures from the second week of soccer practice.

We got there a little early, so Nate and Miles started immediately with their own warm-ups and drills.

SNB12102SNB12103

Wow… warming up didn’t take long at all! I can’t believe the improvement Miles has made with his dribbling skills in just one week!!

 SNB12104SNB12105

He’s able to change directions AND he’s gotten a little faster with his ball handling.  Now, we really need to get him to practice shooting at the goal.

 SNB12106SNB12107

After practice, the kids got their shirts. As mentioned previously, Miles is on the Yellow Hornets. Unfortunately the smallest shirt size available was a boys size S.  Miles wears an XS. I’ve been debating on trying to cut and paste the shirt back together to help it fit a little better.  However, Miles is one of the biggest kids on the team.  The whole team has the same problem.  We’ll just wait and see what the other kids look like on Saturday.

 SNB12108 SNB12109

Let’s go Hornets!  Beat the Green Gators!

This is starting to look so real.  Miles is really playing organized sports at 3 years old!

Here’s to getting college scholarships!!

"He loves me, he loves me not... He LOVES me!!"

Miles helped Nate take the dog out this morning before work/school. These are the beauties he picked, just for me! He was so eager to get them into water too.

Who knew that a couple of weeds could melt my heart on this very gloomy Thursday morning?!

Spring program, 2012

Last Friday was Miles’ spring program.

Even though Miles missed most of the day at school on Friday, we were able to get him back in time for the performance. Unfortunately, he refused to take his nap so his energy level wasn’t as high as we’ve come to expect.  Miles still did his ‘job’ well, but didn’t really fight to be in front the whole time.

Super cute.. don’t you think?

I remembered not to ‘zoom’ at all this time so that the audio didn’t cut out, but I was still pretty shaky.  Sorry about that.

(Biased mom comment: Pushing - Ah, who does that?!)

Now, I’m really excited for spring!

Easter Eggs!

Following Miles’ first practice, we colored eggs for Easter!

Since we were unable to travel for the holiday, it seemed only fitting we try it out again.  Miles is now quite a bit older than he was the first and only time  we colored eggs. He think he enjoyed it AND, thankfully, made me much less nervous this time!

SNB12054 SNB12056  SNB12059

The eggs are looking great! I was nervous for no reason.

Wait.. What did you ask?

You’re right, yellow and blue make green!

Wait, want to put that blue egg in the orange cup? I don’t think that’s a good… Uh oh.

 SNB12072SNB12074

Uh oh was right!… at least our new large supply of brown-ish eggs taste the same as the pretty eggs we had 20 minutes earlier!

 SNB12075

Today’s checklist:

  • Fine motor skill practice
  • Patience practice
  • Art time
  • Family Fun
  • Lessons about color mixing
  • Lessons about the real meaning of Easter

We were sad that we were missing out on quality family time back in Iowa, but were excited for the extra family time for just the 3 of us! We successfully made the best of it – couldn’t ask for more!
