Yummy Footballs

Miles ate like a champ again tonight.

I made a mild heat chili, but added noodles for Miles (a major weakness).   It's hard for Miles to pass up noodles!

I thought, for sure, that he'd rifle through the food to eat the noodles.  Had a kidney bean actually made it into his mouth, I assumed he'd spit it right back out, just like he does with mushrooms (this week), French cut green beans, and cauliflower.

My my surprise, Miles sought out the beans, called them footballs and asked for more!!  He's growing up!!

Look closer….  Yummy!

Miles also demanded a separate plate for each food item tonight: main dish in the center bowl, goldfish crackers to your right, and orange sections to your left.... What a kid!

Shoes

Miles out grew the Pumas.....

So, the replacements are the spiffy green and white Adidas pictured above - Size 9!

Miles loves them, even thought they are a little big
However, I'm confident - given his current eating habits - that they will be a perfect fit within a week or two!

Miles loves them.
He told his school teacher that they make him fast and help him jump really high.
Boy standards!!  I love the way he evaluates something's worth :)

I'll try to get some action shots soon.

Bedtime Safety Precautions

What are your security needs or routines for bedtime?
  • Lock the door...
  • Set up the coffee pot...
  • Turn all lights off....
  • Blow out all candles...
  • Give hugs and kisses to those you love...
  • Say your prayers..
  • Brush your teeth...
Tonight, Miles had a new concern... or something - I'm still struggling to understand his logic!

Do you fear excessive night sweats leading to a salty sting in your eyes?
Are you nervous about the threat of foreign objects or high winds injuring your eyes?

Yes... you ARE seeing this!
A light blue sweat band and blue goggles!
What was he thinking?!

I'm positive this is not normal behavior and I'm hoping this is a one time ordeal.
Any thoughts about possible motives?

How does a boy's mind work?
How does a 2-year-old's mind work?

NOTE: no children were harmed by allowing said attire. Once subject was asleep, all unusual items were removed.

St. Patty's Day 2011

Happy St. Patrick's Day from our Not-Irish Family...

On Saturday, Chicago launched their St. Patrick's Day Festivities....

Not only was there a parade, but the river was dyed GREEN.
Nate was busy working his weekend side jobs and attending a meeting with contractors, so we missed the actual dying of the river.  I considered taking Miles to the parade, but it was cold, during his naptime, and could never compete with the Macy's parade... so I decided against it!

I spent the morning cleaning and dancing with Miles.  Nate returned from his meetings around 4:30pm.  We loaded the family into the car in order to see the infamous green river. Because I know many of you are thinking it - Yes, this river is usually on the green side - but for the next 24 hours or so, the river was a much prettier green :)

After spending time gazing at the green, we walked a little further downtown. We couldn't help but notice all of the crazies stumbling out the bars in every green accessory and article of clothing they could get their hands on.  That's also when we noticed the time and our grumbling tummies.

We made a pit stop at Rock Bottom to eat and warm up.  Miles had a blast decorating the "table cloth paper."
Check out his most recent masterpiece!

So.. that's about as green as we get!
How are you celebrating?

Walking Pneumonia Epidemic

I know - I'm backdating big time... Totally not my style, but necessary when life gets chaotic!

When 7 of 13 children in Miles' class mysteriously get sent home with fevers on the same Tuesday afternoon (Feb 15), I should have known something was up!  But Miles remained healthy and fever free all week long... No reports from parents as to cause for the fevers, so.......

Begin weekend now::
Friday night, Miles spiked a fever.  Nothing crazy, but he was a little warm. Saturday morning, the typical Miles wheezy cough reared its ugly head.  At this point, I started up his usual breathing meds via nebulizer every 4 hours thinking that he has just caught another cold.  The fever hovered around 101 for the next few days and his wheeze was controlled with the timely breathing treatments.

The fever was still present on Sunday night, so Miles couldn't go to daycare on Monday...  Luckily, it was President's Day and Nate had the day off.  While crashing matchbox cars and playing basketball with dad all day, the fever disappeared.  He's allowed to return to school with just a cold, so we dropped him off as usual on Tuesday morning.

During the day, Miles cough broke into something gross and is nose began to ooze green.  When I picked Miles up, I was informed of the diagnoses stemming from the mysterious fevers a week prior - walking pneumonia.  I was also told that Miles needed to be clear by a doctor before allowing him to return to the center, given his symptoms. Miles was up every hour, all night long.... That cough was brutal!

Wednesday, I stayed home with Miles and scheduled a trip to his pediatrician. Regardless of the formal diagnosis, I needed to get a prescription for more of Miles' breathing drugs in addition to any other treatment the Doctor saw fit. Miles' usual doctor wasn't available, but the pediatrician with a specialty in breathing issues had an opening!

Dr. R has a listen to Miles' chest and back, confirmed the wheeze, checked his blood/oxygen levels, and confirmed the suspected diagnosis. My fear was:: Had I waited to long? Should I have tried to take him in over the weekend?

Dr. R said that the illness would have passed on its own, but would have taken weeks. The antibiotic sped things up by at least 300%.  He said that if I hadn't caught and treated his wheeze so early, he likely would have shown symptoms worthy of an ER visit...  Ok... now I don't feel SOOOO terrible.....

Optimist's twist:
1) I found a new pediatrician that I like much better that the one Miles was originally assigned!!
2) We got a new prescription for Miles' breathing meds - with refills!
3) The antibiotic was only a once a day for 5 days regimen.

Pessimist's spin:
1) Miles is really sick
2) It's currently Wednesday and Miles can't go back to school until Monday.
3) Nate and I are too new in our jobs to have accrued much any time off.

What to do now?!

It's now 6pm on Wednesday night.  Miles and I just got home from the Pharmacy. I stuffed Miles with some Easy Mac, packed up his favorite things, loaded up the car and commenced the 3 hour drive to Dubuque, IA.  Grandma and Grandpa Banwarth to the rescue!

The grandparents were sweet enough to meet me in Stockton, IL (saving me 2 hours, roundtrip) for the switch.... We moved the carseat and Miles' stuff into the truck, enjoyed a quick potty break and explanation of medical treatments before starting the car back up to head back to our respective homes. I finally found my pillow in the wee hours of the morning, trying to accumulate enough sleep to get through the next work day.

Grandma and Grandpa kept Miles until the weekend allowing Nate and I to work the rest of the week.
We are Super Grateful for your help...and for returning my little man healthy!!

Here's to Health!
That is all - Good Night!

Just like daddy - again!

Have you ever heard this saying?

"Monkey see, Monkey do"

Well, that has become a family motto...

YOU KNOW HE DID NOT LEARN THIS FROM ME!!!

Yes, I eat cereal just like every other normal human being, but drinking the flavored milk with floaties straight out of the bowl - No Way!

Dad's a great teacher, don't you think?
Thanks for bonding with the little guy :o)

If only Miles picked up other skills this fast.....

Everything you wanted to know about Scarlet Fever...

....but forgot to ask!

Scarlet fever is a disease caused by Group A Streptococcus - the same bacteria that causes strep throat, however scarlet fever presents with a rash as well.

Group A Strep
It's most common in children form 2-10 years of age. Symptoms typically manifest within 7 days of exposure. Once the fever appears, the rash pops up within the next 24 hours, covering much of the body over the next 2 days.

Symptoms include:
  • Sore throat
  • Rash - sandpapery, appearing on the neck and chest first
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bright red color in the creases of the underarm and groin (Pastia's lines)
  • Chill
  • General discomfort (malaise)
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Swollen, red tongue (strawberry tongue)
  • Vomiting
Disease transmission is direct contact with exhaled droplets from the infected person.

There are severe complications for an untreated person, but 24 hours of antibiotics renders the infected individual safe to be around - ie. no longer contagious.

Here's some pictures:

The Rash

Strawberry Tongue

In short - this is a very disease, but catching it quickly can save you a lot of discomfort!

So you ask... why the crash course on Scarlet Fever?!?!

Because - ONE week ago Thursday, a kid in Miles' daycare class was diagnosed with the disease!
The center was professionally disinfected immediately.
We educated ourselves on early symptoms, treatments, risks..
The risk period has almost passed and we are still in the clear!

Can you believe we escaped that one?!?!
Thank you, God, for your protection!
Crisis Averted!

Confidence or arrogance?

Confidence or arrogance?
Personally, my vote is adorably entertaining!!

I took the dog out to do his business.  I was out of the apartment for 15 minutes at best.
This is what I can back to.....

Hit the ball hard.... and the crowd goes wild!

Nate was giggling....
Miles taught Nate this new behavior!
Where does he learn this stuff?

Anybody else have a severe case of Spring Fever?!

Boosted !

Miles got a new carseat last week! He's officially been Boosted!

Miles' height is reaching a whole new level; one that elevates him to a new level of adolescence! He's pretty excited about it too...

Miles' shoulders fall above the highest belt settings of his convertible carseat. We transitioned Miles to the Britax Roundabout a month before moving to New York.  It is served us well and I highly recommend the seat if you're looking into a seat beyond the infant carrier. If only he was a little shorter, this chair would have held him until he reached 40lbs.

I read into a bunch of the regulations for Illinois concerning carseats.  Once Miles reached 32lbs and 36 inches, we are allowed to move him into a Highback booster seat that uses the vehicle's shoulder/lab seat belt.  Boosters are available with 5 point harness systems, but I wanted this next seat to be his last.  Given the time that kids have to remain in carseats these days, that's not an easy task!  After a lot of looking and digging, here's what I settled on:

The First Years Compass Pathway B570

Here's my top 10 reasons for choosing this seat:
1) the back is adjustable with his height
2) the back is removable as Miles gets older
3) the seat is rated for 30lbs to 100lbs
4) has 2 adjustable, removable cup holders
5) the arms move up and down (Miles love this!)
6) has the LATCH system - helps to hold the seat in place when child isn't strapped in.
7) adjustable and color-coded seat belt placement
8) super high safety ratings
9) foldable - great for flying or taxi use
10) head rest for the car sleeper

Please don’t get sick…

Take a long look……

pizza

Doesn’t that make you hungry?  MMMM… Casey’s pizza!!

My first question – do you think this pizza still tastes good if you can’t see it?  Miles didn’t seem to mind!

Driving home from Iowa this weekend, we needed quick on the road meal idea that wasn’t McDonalds… I had the “brilliant” idea to order a pizza.  I found the number and address for the Stockton, IL Casey’s general store and called in a pizza when we were still about 10 minutes away.

I thought I was thinking ahead by purchasing some silverware to cut up Miles’ pizza for him.  I had packed a bowl for him, but forgot utensils.  When we settled back into the car, I finally realized the flaws in my plan.

1 – It’s Super Dark!

2 - I didn’t have plates for Nate or myself.

3 - I didn’t have napkins.

4 - Pizza is kind of hard to eat while driving.

Well…  there went that “brilliant” idea.

Miles dug right in!  I cut up a whole slice and even gave him the crust.  Within minutes, Miles asked for more.  I was shocked!  I cut up a second piece, but gave Nate the crust.  I didn’t think he’d finish the slice.  To my surprise, only a few more minutes passed before he asked for more – Again!  I was a little hesitant, but cut up a 3rd piece.  This time I ate his crust. Nate and I has slowed a bunch by now… but not Miles.  He asked for a fourth slice. WOW!  I cut up a half a piece. I was afraid that once he filled up, the remaining pizza in his bowl would make its way to the floor and seats. AGAIN – Miles wanted more.  I gave him the remainder of the slice, including the crust while telling him he had the rest of the pizza.  If he cleaned his bowl, the pizza was all gone!  He was a little bummed about that news, but continued to inhale the last of his portion.

Can you believe my skinny little 2 year old ate 1/3 of a large pizza?!?!  I can’t either! Better yet, he didn’t even make a mess of his shirt, pants, face, or the backseat…  He’s growing up too fast – obviously!

photo (3)

I spent the rest of the trip hoping the food Miles ingested didn’t find its way up to splatter the backseat!

I’ll leave you with this thought…  If the above is a recent, accurate illustration of Miles’ current appetite, what can I expect from 14 year old Miles?
